CA has some seriously stupid laws... they would prefer to give school money to illegals then citizens!!
What makes the law stupid? Shoplifting losses total over $30 billion a year in America. It is the number one property crime in America. In order to qualify you must be convicted of three felonies. Shoplifting can only be a felony if you steal over $400 worth of merchandise or if you have prior convictions. However, even in both these instances, most charges plea out to a misdemeanor. Moreover, most serial shoplifters are only caught after several successful thefts. Thus, the only people who ever get convicted under the three strikes law are people who have shoplifted dozens of times.
I agree that the three-strike law is over the top. I think it is going to be repealed. California has got to rid of some prisoners pretty fast according to an article I read. They have lifers for crimes that just don't call for that kind of punishment.
It's called frustration with an ineffective 'revolving door' system.

You're reading How can Californians be so stupid to have a "3 Strikes" law that sends people to prison for life for shoplifting, leading to prison overcrowding, billions in debt for prison costs, and federal orders to release prisoners from the overcrowded prisons?
