http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_contract
from wiki:
"Social contract describes a broad class of theories that try to explain the ways in which people form states and/or maintain social order. The notion of the social contract implies that the people give up some rights to a government or other authority in order to receive or maintain social order."
My definition: Humans, being naturally competitive creatures, constantly at odds with one another for resources and dominance, enter into social contracts to balance the survival and well-being of the species with one's need to express individuality and competition. From the tribe to the Republic, all administration and alliance has been a social contract.
