It stands for winter mode. When it is highlighted, it removes the overdrive selection and the car / suv will remain in a lower gear to assist with traction.

Hi, the answer to your question is: 'W' means 'winter mode'. Refer to the Owners Manual where the function is properly descibed. If you don't have the Owners Manual you can get one on E-Bay for around £8 or £10.
