That's pretty long, many barbells would be around 3/4" for the initial piercing and usually 5/8" after the swelling has gone, some people with thin tongues can wear 1/2" barbells. If you have a fat tongue or are prone to serious swelling, it might be the length you need, a good piercer should be able to tell you what length you'll need initially and afterward. 14g is a very common diameter to pierce with.
