Question

Help answer this question below.

I'm meeting a friend (who's never been to CA) in San Francisco, and we're going to be tourists for a few days. I haven't been to the Bay area in 10 yrs. Can I have your input on where to go/what to see?

Trying to make me jealous, huh?! Anyway, I'll do my best. Disclaimer- I just pulled out my AAA book to spark my memory. Haven't been there in a couple of years! So, some ideas:

    1) When I haven't been to a place before, or it's been awhile, I always like to start with a city tour. That way, you can get a good overview and see where you want to head back to.

    2) Alcatraz, as Gracin said, is extremely interesting. I'd highly recommend it.

    3) Ghiradelli Square. Some shopping and lots of chocolate!!! ;)

    4) Chinatown for wandering and a meal

    5) Take a cable car ride for sure!

    6) Don't forget Lombard Street, the world's (I think) crookedest street.

    7) Do take a harbor cruise. SF has one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. And of course wander around Fisherman's Wharf- that's a no-brainer. Some great waterfront shopping and dining.

    8) Get out to Saucelito, the beautiful artist's colony. You can get a ferry there from SF

    9) If you're so inclined, take a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge.

    10) If you have a car, I'd highly recommend getting up to Muir Woods, an amazing grove of redwood trees! Get there early if you do go. You could also head up to Napa or Sonoma if you like wineries.

    11) Have dinner at the revolving restaurant at the top of the Hyatt Hotel (almost positive it's the Hyatt- had a group there.) Pricey, but very memorable.

Hope this helps. You're making me want to take a trip to CALIFORNIA! Be sure to let me know how it turns out when you get back. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. :)

Chinatown. Haight-Ashbury. Fisherman's Wharf. The Golden Gate. Lombard St. Ride on a cable car at least once.

Berkeley and Oakland are very interesting and can be reached by BART train.

If you like nature, go to Muir Woods. The trees are GIGANTIC.

The best pizza is in Haight-Ashbury at a little place called "Escape from New York."

If you like mainstream shopping (Old Navy, H&M, etc..) Market Street is where it's at.

If you like eclectic shops, try Mission St. area

If you like weird food and small, colorful toys and tiger toenail powder or whatever go to Chinatown.

I especially like Berkeley which is only a few stops away on the BART, the Rockland area in Oakland is very pleasant as well.

This question is a year old, but for other people who might be planning on going:

If you have time, you might consider a short drive down to the Rosicrucian Egyptian museum in San Jose.

Haven't any of you ever heard of the Napa vineyards. Take a wine tasting tour of Napa Valley (St. Helena.) Go walk around Berkeley. Especially the campus. Ride the BART from one end to the other. (you will notice that it is much smoother north of MacArthur Station in Oakland. That's because I was the chief alignment surveyor for all of that. Golden Gate Park is beautiful. Fisherman's Warf is great fun.

I see that this was a year and a half ago. What did you do?

See a play or the long running show, "Beach Blanket Babylon". If the weather is nice walk or ride a bike across the Golden Gate Bridge. It's also fun to take a ferry over to Sausilito and enjoy lunch there. You get a nice view of the city from the water. If you want to tour Alcatraz, make your reservations well in advance....at least 2 or 3 weeks.

If you have time for a day trip, visit nearby Napa Valley. There are bus tours or you can rent a car and visit the wineries on your own. Learn about the wineries and get free wine tasting coupons at http://www.cheers2wine.com.
