  • Before you begin, disconnect the battery. Most experts will reccomend disconnecting the negative battery terminal but I prefer to disconnect BOTH terminals to eliminate any possibility of accidents. The distributor sits at the rear of the engine. Doing the job is much easier if you can remove the hood from the truck. If thats not an option then you will need to get what is called a distributor wrench. This tool is bent in a certain way to be able to reach the nut or bolt that holds the distributor in place. The first thing to do is to remove the distributor cap and take note of what position the rotor is in. Mark the position on the distributor itself so that you can properly align the rotor when you reinstall it. Also mark your distributor and engine so that you can put your distributor in the correct position as well. This will ensure that the rotor hits the right terminal on the distributor cap when its perspective cylinder is ready to fire. Also, its important to ensure that the distributor itself is reinstalled in the exact same position as it was orginally sitting on the engine. You will eventually have timing issues if you inadvertantly rotate the distributor or rotor out of sync with the rest of the engine. Once all of your marks are made, disconnect the wiring harness from the side of the distributor and remove the bolt that holds it in place. Gently twist it counter clockwise and it will lift right out. When reinstalling it, be sure to put a small dab of multi purpose grease or engine assembly lube on the worm gear. After putting the distributor back in place and aligning the distributor and rotor at the appropriate marks that you initially made, tighten the bolt that holds it into place. Before reinstalling the distributor cap rotate the engine to TDC (the Top Dead Center mark on the crankshaft pulley) and check to make sure that the rotor is pointing at position #1 on the cap. This will ensure that you reinstalled the distributor correctly. Once you have determined that all is well up to this point, reinstall your cap, reconnect the battery and turn the key!
