Freelancer is a ripoff of the old "Wing Commander: Privateer" series. WC:P was better, imo, so I'd tell you to go back to that, if you can handle 90s graphics. The games were fantastic.
Some people really like X3: Terran Conflict which was released in the US, April, 2009 (late 2008 in the rest of the world).
I have the game, but haven't really sat down to give it an honest try. Graphics are not bad... as much of the game as I saw.
There are a lot of games featuring the same gameplay, but I don't know how "similar" they all are...
Some of these choices might be "FreeSpace", "Independence War", "Jumpgate", "DarkStar One", "Spaceforce"...
Of course, like MisterKnowItAll said, you might want to try some older ones to feel how it all started, return to the core of this genre (using DOSbox might be inevitable for some).
Good choices might be (sorted by release date) "Wing Commander 1,2", "StarWars - X-Wing" (has a whole series!), "Descent", "Terminal Velocity" (my fave), "X-com Interceptor", etc.

You're reading Is there any PC games that are similar to FREELANCER? I am looking for a really good space game, NOT EVE!!!!

Come, come. I agree that WC:P was the first to be published, but others were already in development at the time. Saying "Freelancer is a ripoff" is irrelevant since many more were made afterward anyway. Besides, it's not so bad - even better with the right mod, that is.
And I agree: A lot of 90s games were fantastic! :)

Freelancer follows almost the exact same plot and has virtually the exact same gameplay as WC:P, but came out almost a decade after WC:P. I enjoyed both games, but the first thing I thought when I played Freelancer was, "Oh, it's like Privateer, but everything's with a mouse." Both games made sequels (and, again Freelancer 2 was strikingly similar to WC:P2) and all games are totally enjoyable. I wish they'd re-make the original Wing Commander into a more modern format, maybe let you play Terran or Kilrathi. That'd be cool...
