I can see a lot of truth in it: most of our people can read, but look at what they read: there is so much rubbish out there. I constantly hear people sprouting something they have half understood from a sensationalist book that was badly researched to begin with and I cry...was this why we introduced universal education? LOL

Very true!

It is true in the sense that the basic reading skills are a very important part of education, and the advanced reading skills (such as analyse) are only shown after you master the basics. As to learning which books are better, I think that we develop this ability by reading, or talking about the books, or reading book reports. Anyway, who could really appreciate that a book is better than another one, except ourselves? The communication with a book happens at various levels, and a book which is good for one person could be bad for someone else. I think that if you have a good teacher a school, you can already get some help in recognizing a good book. Also, there are some books which are not necessarily very good, but that you should read anyway.

I don't believe so - that is a central skill which I have been taught and have acquired through my education.
