anything over $100 is a felony, anything under is a misdemeanor. i'm thinking a certain amount of community service hours, a fine, or maybe even just a warning.
If she has never been in trouble before she might be able to plead no contest and get a slap on the wrist !
A fine for a misdemeanor and probation is most probable. Your daughter should be reminded she's an adult now, and what she does can plague her the rest of her life. You will want to try and get this stricken from her record after probation. Whether or not you can do this without an attorney I guess depends upon the judge.
What's she being charged with?
Yes, get an attorney. Probably one year of probation.
You definitely need an attorney.

You're reading I live in the state of ky and my 19 yr old was caught shoplifting at kmart. The total amount of merchandise was $8. She has never been in any kind of trouble before. What will her punishment be when she goes to court and should I get an attorney?

Ah, this was what I was wondering in my answer. I'd say make her as modestly pretty and upstanding-looking as possible and tell her to work on her "remorseful face." Talk to a lawyer and see if you need one. I'd plead "no contest."
