Temperature fluctuation is critical to safety. With the concern about Salmonella, eggs gathered from laying hens should be refrigerated as soon as possible. After eggs are refrigerated, they need to stay that way. A cold egg left out at room temperature can sweat, facilitating the growth of bacteria. Refrigerated eggs should not be left out more than 2 hours.

There is no reason why eggs should be refrigerated, as they have a protective shell which keeps them fresh. It is common for eggs to be kept in a fridge, like other dairy produce, such as milk or cheese, as it is assumed this is necessary, but they can be kept anywhere, although like most "foodstuff" it wouldn't be wise to keep them anywhere particulalrly warm. Sometimes restaurants, etc may boil a large amount of eggs for the use of egg mayonaise sandwiches or other meals. These cooked eggs must be refrigerated to keep them fresh as once they are cooked, the shell is less protective and the egg can go off so easily. You have to be careful with eggs like this not to leave them for too long before consumption. Also with eggs in general, don't take risks. If they float in water, they are most likely to be going bad and should be disposed of.

I don't think eggs should be refrigerated.

Refrigeration increases the life span of an egg, by around 5 times. It may last 5 weeks on the shelf (in a dark cool place), but they will last much longer if kept in the frige. Eggs used to be painted with a solution (this is my Nanna's story) and then kept in a sand filled container - and they lasted for a very long time. Cooked eggs need to be kept in the fridge. It also seems that the eggs in USA have a lot of salmonella contanmination (from reading others answers), and keeping them in the fridge will help keep the number of bacteria down (maybe stopping you from getting food poisoning).
