They make a pair of rubber covered tongs that are used in home canning to pick up hot jars. They work great for what you are trying to do. You can find them in the bigger stores during the summertime or go to a kitchenware store at a mall.

well i never heated it in a pot i usually put in in the sink with hot water that will usually soften it up pretty well.also after you do that you can put really hot water in the can to rinse out the remaining sugar.
