Approved oils are in SAE classes 5W-40 and 5W-30 although BMW recommends:
Use only approved "BMW High-Performance Synthetic Oil."

With BMW, I've heard they use a special grade of oil. The best and most accurate way to answer this question is to call your local BMW dealer's service center and ask them.
