Well, historically, the biggest difference was in character developement.

Though modern DC and Marvel comics are MUCH closer to each other in terms of character development, this wasn't always true. Even so, today you can still see some schism between the two comic companies.

Historically, DC heros and villians were very powerful characters (or even not so cpowerful characters) whose contribution to the story lines was far more action oriented than character oriented. Depth of character, I mean. They were well defined as "good" or "bad", but beyond that there was little depth which gave insight into their abilities and interactions in the REAL world (the world you and I live in).

Superman, for example, never had any real issues as a person. His biggest personal problem in his mundane existance as Clark Kent was whether or not Lois could find out he was actually Superman. No personal problems like how he pays his bills, no trips to the grocery store, no appointments with doctors, no children, no car problems...etc.

Marvel, however, has almost always had characters who had a REAL existance that people could actually relate to.

Take Spiderman, for example. Super strong with is proportionate spider strength, can all but fly with is abilities at web swinging, spider sense which tells him when danger is close. Yet he had to bust his *ss to work his way through college while caring for Aunt May, has girlfriend problems, always worrying about rent and food. All things which real people can relate to.

Simple realism. Marvel has a host of hereos that mostly rely of wits to use their powers creatively, while DC was more about excercising their power. Also DC never had characters who could be diffined as either good or evil, Marvel has more of a conflict within conflict, such as Punisher and Darevil each with his own definition of justice.

DC presented a more ordered, logical, everything is ok world-view, with authority always cast in a positive light. Batman answered a "bat-signal" sent by Commissioner Gordon, Captain America was a war hero, Superman was always hailed as a hero, etc. Marvel was more "counter-culture". Spiderman was often a fugitive, Wolverine's claws were something the government "did to him", Senator Kelly got elected on his anti-mutant stance, lots of minority superheroes. But like The Chief said, that was then, and now they're both pretty much the same.
