The same reason as why professional prostitutes fees are so hide. They both screw you over.
Most jobs difficulty level can be judged by the length of training required and the pay is usually relative to that.
Because when people get into trouble, they are willing to pay the big bucks for the lawyers to get them out of it.
They are not. Just as in medicine, there is the potential for a lucky few to make the big bucks by becoming a partner in a prestigious firm, but that is the exception rather than the rule.
Its because they are highly qualified people..who, are needed and therefore can charge what the hell they like..its the same with most professions :D

OJ paid his lawyers 1.7 million only if they got hinm off. They did and so they were worth it. Yes he got creamed in a civil trial, but what's the monentary loss comapred to freedom and getting away with murder.
Those lawyers sure did their jobs well. If they'd been the prosocution, OJ would be on death row!
