Yes. But you do get honest cops too.
I am aware of the scope and severity of crime escalating on a daily basis.
I am aware of the abuse of power, yes, but the scope and severity, sadly, I am probably unaware. There would be so much stuff that never makes it outside the police-station.
Yes I am, I have friends that were on the NYPD.
Corruption in the government breeds abuses in the police force. The municipalities set the standard. If they tell the police go out and get tickets and have quotas then the police feel it is their job to be heavy handed and it goes down the line.
If the government is not corrupt there is less chance of the all powerful attitude to be present because they know they have to answer to a uncorrupted government.
The police today are under-trained due to budget issues. They have terrible attitudes because they get that badge and feel empowered to be judge, jury, and executioner. That's just poor training because it's a totally unprofessional attitude.
Also when the municipalities go along with their corrupt ways it empowers them. So many people have been profiled, targeted and harassed. You basically have to kiss their ass or they might beat the shit out of you and arrest you.
Until the police start getting the training they need it will not stop. They have to learn to be just what they are, a policeman, not Judge Dredd.
There are a lot of police that abuse their power. I think the public is not at all aware of the scope or severity of the problem, though. All I know is, you do not mess with a 25 year old with an attitude and a gun. +5
There are people in every profession that abuse their power. Picking on cops seems biased.

How do cops maintain their energy level? You never see a cop that's flustered or laid back. Do they drink a lot of Red Bull?

Just like you have some noble crooks that only steal to feed their kiddies. The sad and irrefutable fact is that this brutality is a lot more widespread than one might think. This isn't a case of a few bad apples: it is a case of the good apples getting lost in the bad. Need proof? Look for yourself. This is only the tip of the iceberg...

That is a minor incident in the police world. Poor judgement, over zealousness etc. There are far worse things that happen. However, law enforcement does the best that it can without creating a police state and of course, you get bad apples in every walk of life, not just the police.

'That'? As in 'That' singular? I posted over a dozen reports of brutality, from a wide geographical range in that thread. This is anything but an isolated mistake.

The more police you have the more mistakes will be made. And I just read the incident that you posted in your question. Couldn't see anything else.

So you think we need less police?
by ninja man on August 8th, 2009
Not at all. I think we will need a great deal more in the future. I am talking about proportion. The more sacks of apples you buy, the greater number of bad ones will come out of them.
