Stalin sent a hit squad to Mexico which attempted to kill him in his home compound there in February of 1940. They failed, but a Mexican NKVD agent buried a pick-ax in his head in his home in May of the same year. He died later.
A Mexican Stalinist named Ramon Merceader was at first getting Trotsky to trust him, Ramon would have Trotsky cirtique his essays. Trotsky's bodygaurds eventually trusted Ramon enough to come in and not be searched for weapons.. On August 20, 1940 Ramon snuck an ice ax into the house. As soon as Trotsky turned around Ramon stabbed him in the back of his skull with the ice ax. Trotsky didn't die instantly though, he wrestled with Ramon for a bit until his bodygaurds rushed into the room, they were about to kill Ramon when Trotsky said, "Don't this man has a story to tell!" Unfourtantely Trotsky died the following day from brain damage at the age of 60...

It was a long war between him and Stalin. Trotsky despised Stalin and fought his leadership after Lenin's death. They were very much ideological as well as personal enemies. Stalin feared him and his possible return to Russia.
