Well, yeah. That's the whole idea behind sharing programs! Other people let strangers (like you) copy files off their system. You, in turn let people copy files rom you that you've collected from other people.

Just make sure that your security setting are correct so that the only folder that people can download from is the folder that you've designated for sharing, and you should be okay...

And all the other caveats about having the latest Anti Virus and Firewall software installed go double if you're into anonymous file sharing...

After you've downloaded the music files, remove them from the shared folder the programs use. This folder is usually the same for downloaded files and shared/uploadable files. You won't share the files anymore after you've removed them from that folder, which is not very nice, but at least it's save. Create a folder called "music" i.e. on C:/, and store your completed files over there...

In most types of P2P (peer-to-peer) downloading places, there's a button called "options." Under this options button, a user can choose what to share, how many files can be simultaneously uploaded by other users (if any) and how many can be downloaded to the user. The user can opt not to share anything at all. However, unless you choose "don't share" or a similar variant, your files will be shared. Another tip (lots of people I know forget) when you choose "don't share" you have to hit "Apply" not just "OK."

You can go to the preferences section of most file sharing utilites and turn off file sharing. It can be done with Kazaa for sure and I believe most other file sharing utilities, but you'll have to hit the web to find out how to turn them off, because I've forgotten.
