Does a woman have to be pregnant to lactate? I've recently heard conflicting stories. If she doesn't I've been missing out on a lot and really have some catching up to do.

Frequent use of a breast pump will stimulate milk production, pregnant or not. That's how adoptive moms can breast feed, although I don't think many of them are aware of the possibility.

There are reports from the Holocaust, that due to malnutrition, with subsequent proper nutrition resumed often resulted in milk production, even in men!

This was due to the wild hormone fluctuations.

Simple answer is NO. Pregnancy creates hormones that tells the breasts to begin production - however, certain medications (and, reportedly, herbs), frequent suckling, pumping or hand expressing (Marmet Technique) can get the breasts to being lactation.
