I need to garnish an employees wage for child support.
How do I record this payroll entry?
Also, how do I record the payable to the state agency?

    Dodgy Dog in a Sable COAT

    The payroll entry would go under "deductions". You would then post the deduction to a general ledger clearing account called "Child Support clearing".
    So, as an example, say someone is earning $500, paying $100 tax and $50 child support:
    The entry is:
    DR Gross Wages 500.00
    CR Income Tax clearing 100.00
    CR Child Support clearing 50.00
    CR Bank 350.00

    Then you send the income tax to the IRS and the child support to the agency, thus:

    DR Income Tax clearing 100.00
    DR Child Support clearing 50.00
    CR Bank 150.00
