It could also be as simple as your car hasnt heated up yet. My car idles pretty high until it warms up.
The choke could be stuck on.
Check air flow.
Depending on the car though, it might be running to rich on fuel..
i dont know what model it is but most cars now days have idol control valves very easy to change and inexpensive
Check all the little hoses going to the throttle body or carburetor if so equipped. usually a high idle means there is a vacuum leak. Also check the seal at the bottom of the air intake, leaks can occur there as well. A leak in the system after the filter can lead to dirt inside and engine damage. Check that the throttle body is not loose on the manifold too.

My 2004 Jeep runs at the right temperature on the open road, but if I get in stop and go traffic or idle the engine temperature soars. Why?

I have a 1989 Buick LeSabre . Neither the A/C or heater blow out the vents when the fan is turned on. The fan itself works fine.
