Question

Help answer this question below.

Planet earth has existed for millions, possibly billions of years. What makes "green people" think that their "two-cents" is going to prolong the earth's existance? Just curious.

    Myth:
We have to save the earth.
Frankly, the earth doesn't need to be saved. Nature doesn't give a hoot if human beings are here or not. The planet has survived cataclysmic and catastrophic changes for millions upon millions of years. Over that time, it is widely believed, 99 percent of all species have come and gone while the planet has remained. Saving the environment is really about saving our environment - making it safe for ourselves, our children, and the world as we know it. If more people saw the issue as one of saving themselves, we would probably see increased motivation and commitment to actually do so.

It is not going to prolong the Earth's existence for a nanosecond. It might prolong humanities existence, but not the Earth. Every single human being could die in agony and the Earth wouldn't give a damn.

I would, though. When greens talk about "the Earth", that is a shorthand for "the Earth as a suitable place for humans to live".

Actually, of course, some humans will survive more or less whatever, There are more than six billion of us. What, inn the long term, does it matter if three billion die of starvation, or fighting in wars to avoid starvation. Humanity will carry on - what do mere people matter?

If I lived in a third world country and green activists were helping to keep my environment habitable I'd be very grateful. Prolonging the earth's existance isn't in our hands.

"Green people" that I have met, don't think their "two cents" will save the planet. They think we should be utilising resources we have, with less detrimental effects on the various inhabitants of planet earth. Words mean little unless they inspire action, but generally we are heading for trouble one way or another on the current path.

Too many stubborn and ignorant people in this generation to benefit society, the best course of action is educating children to care more about life in the future.

The planet will be around, long after humanity has suffocated itself.

Hi, perhaps it's more to do with being kind to Earth. Rather than take take take destroy and plunder. Some of us do care, and try to give a little back, albeit in many different forms. Anyway, that's how i roll.

We are interested in prolonging the earth as it was intended to be inhabited, to be enjoyed for our children and the generations to come. It is not some temporary playground just for this time period to be disrespected and pillaged and plundered. If you are not part of the conscious solution, you are part of the problem. I prefer to help not hurt.

    1) What makes the Earth particularly interesting for the Green movement, is not its existence as a planet, but the whole biosphere that has developed on it, mankind included. One of their goals is the preservation of this environment, as far as we have a possibility to preserve it. A part of it is to avoid extinction scenarios derived from human activities.

    2) "Green politics is a political ideology which places a high importance on ecological and environmental goals, and on achieving these goals through broad-based, grassroots, participatory democracy. Green politics is advocated by supporters of the Green movement, which has been active through Green parties in many nations since the early 1980s. The political term Green, a translation of the German Grün, was coined by die Grünen, the first successful Green party, formed in the late 1970s. The term political ecology is sometimes used in Europe and in academic circles.
Supporters of Green politics, called Greens, share many ideas with the ecology, conservation, environmental, feminist, and peace movements. In addition to democracy and ecological issues, green politics is concerned with civil liberties, social justice and nonviolence."

"Since green politics emerged as an ideology, it has been defined by a few key green principles. The German Greens drafted the earliest statement of this kind, called the Four Pillars of the Green Party. The Four Pillars have been repeated by many green parties worldwide as a foundational statement of the green ideology:
    Ecological wisdom
    Social justice
    Grassroots democracy
    Nonviolence
In 1984, the Green Committees of Correspondence in the United States expanded the Four Pillars into Ten Key Values which, in addition to the Four Pillars mentioned above, include:
    Decentralization
    Community-based economics
Post-patriarchal values (later translated to Feminism)
    Respect for diversity
    Global responsibility
    Future focus
In 2001, the Global Greens were organized as an international Green movement. The Global Greens Charter identified six guiding principles:
    Ecological wisdom
    Social justice
    Participatory democracy
    Nonviolence
    Sustainability
    Respect for diversity"

    3) "Human extinction is the hypothetical end of the human species. Various scenarios have been discussed in science, popular culture, and religion (see End time). The breadth of this article is on existential risks.
Humans are very widespread on the Earth, and live in communities which (whilst interconnected) are capable of some kind of basic survival in isolation. Therefore, pandemic and deliberate killing aside, to achieve human extinction, the entire planet would have to be rendered uninhabitable. This would typically be during a mass extinction event, a precedent of which exists in the Permian–Triassic extinction event among other examples.
In the near future, two anthropogenic extinction scenarios exist: catastrophic climate change, and global nuclear annihilation; and two possible natural ones[original research?]: bolide impact and large-scale volcanism. Both natural causes have occurred repeatedly in the geologic past and there is no reason to consider them unlikely in the future. As technology develops, there is a possibility that humans may be deliberately destroyed by the actions of a rogue state or individual in a form of global suicide attack. A more likely scenario is the emergence of a pandemic of such virulence and infectiousness that very few humans survive the disease. While not actually a human extinction event, this may leave only very small, very scattered human populations that would then evolve in isolation.

It is important to differentiate between human extinction and the extinction of life on Earth. Of possible extinction events, only a pandemic is selective enough to eliminate humanity while leaving the rest of complex life on earth relatively unscathed."

I'm pretty sure the Earth will do whatever it wants to in the end, regardless of what we mere mortals think.

So NASA were there to see it happen? That's the only way that they could give credence to that statement. As Michael Crichton said, in matters environmental all we can do is guess what might have happened and what the future might bring. The reallity is that the forces are infinitely more complex than we can understand.

First----Didnt you know that Big Bird is smarter than Ernie. Or so some people think. What do you think? I might as well admit that I am an odd-duck. I feel better. Therefore I say this: I feel the Earth is on a journey of its own and the Earth has its own compass. I was reading the other day about a 6th grade science class--in Wisconsin and listening to them talk about there science projects. All I could think was that some of them should have been advanced.
