Based on what you said you want to do, I would say you do not need a degree. A+ certification would be a good start, followed by Network+. You can attain those through self study or formal courses, although I would recommend the latter. It's hard to get a lot of practical experience from a book.
FWIW, I have been in IT for 25 years and do not have a degree.
an AA is all for most trouble shooting down to componet level or 2 years in the field also qualifies for AA, combo school and work you do it in just over 1 year if you know and like trig you got most of it beat ...

It wouldn't hurt, but people who get a computer science degree typically aren't going for the kind of job you're describing. They're going for programming or engineering or analyst jobs. I have seen many people get the kind of job you described without a degree. I didn't say no computer training at all however.
Look at it this way - you don't need a degree in biology to cut grass.
