They were very common, prior to the 1920's they were not common. the one thing that changed all of that was a movie, believe it or not.

the movie was called "Birth of a Nation". and it started most of the common generalizations about blacks such as:

Blacks love watermelon, in the movie they depicted blacks stealing watermelons from fields, and also stealing chickens, and chasing white women around for sex.

the hero of the movie was the Ku Klux Klan, they came riding into town, and beat up all of the blacks and saved the white women from being raped.

What made matters worst, then president Woodrow Wilson was suppose to have said after seeing the movie "that was the most accurate depiction of history I have ever seen.

read more about the movie to understand it's impact on society, and blacks

Sadley, rather common and not always limited to the South. Some occurred in Illinois and other Northern states. Emmett Till in 1950's Alabama is a memorable one. A 1913 lynching of a Jewish pencil factory manager in Atlanta is another famous lynching--Leo Frank, who was white.

Certainly more than were ever publicized. There are only estimates. It was a shameful time.

Sadly, I just was downtown the other day where a tree stands that was used in one. I am so happy those days are over and sad they ever happened
