    Thankfully no.

Damaged, but not destroyed. We lost the roof on our house and two sheds, we also lost our entire privacy fence.

  • I was in Hurricane Katrina in South Florida which was a category 5, I as I recall. My home was without electricity for a week, but the home next to me burned to the ground due to a telephone pole collapsing on it. That was a narrow escape and then in 2003 I accidentally burned my house down with a candle, which hardly qualifies as a natural disaster since I was that natural disaster! All is well, though.

Not totally. There was a storm about 8 years ago when lightning struck a tree next to the house and sheared off a huge branch. When the branch fell, it too off the chimney, scaled the shingles off the roof and cracked the roof of the back porch and pulled out the power line. Assessment of damage - $11,000.

Thankfully, no. I've had to repace the roof twice - once from wind damage & once from hail damage, but that's a worst I have experienced.

yes, when katrina hit i lived in waveland,ms. we left at the last minute and went to georgia, our plan was to stay for three days. we ended up staying over six months. we could have returned and lived in a FEMA tralier , but we didn't think three girls and a big dog would really fit. our house was gone, only a concret slab and stairs were left.we ended up buying another house .

No, but some friends of mine lost their home because of the wildfire a few years back. It was rebuilt.

Not destroyed...but have had to replace the roof 3 times due to hail damage, and the very first house I lived in here in Illinois had damage from a small earthquake, but nothing major.

Yes. My wife and I with our two children lived in Homestead, Florida when hurricane Andrew went through on August 24, 1992. Our house was a total loss. We were fine (physically) because we evacuated to a point further north in Florida where the storm did not go.

It was during this experience that we learned that we were better off with a totaled house than one that was, say, 40% damaged. We got the full coverage of our policy which was enough to have it rebuilt with improvements - both structural and aesthetic. Had it been partial damage there was a high probability that we would have gone through the nightmare of having to document the purchase price of certain items - which is something you don't want have to deal with in times of such great stress. The experience was difficult but it did help us to get our priorities in line and the children seemed to have viewed it as more of an adventure than anything else. Many of those who were in the storm, however, are still suffering from post traumatic syndrome.

I was one of the lucky ones. Many people lost their jobs because their place of work was destroyed and not re-established. My employer was terrific - paying me during a two week period when I wasn't even there and providing resources to help with the emotional side of the recovery when I returned. I more than repaid that benefit by working my tail off even to a higher degree than I had before - in my line of work almost all of us gave more productive hours that our agreement required - to do a really good job required that.

Sadly, even before I left the college where I worked they began embracing the corporate mentality so if such a thing were to happen again, I don't believe they would respond so beautifully as they had before. I thank the good Lord every day that I'm retired and no longer have to deal directly with the negative changes that have occurred there. At the szame time I thank the good Lord for the opportunity to work there when loyalty went both ways.
