Help answer this question below.
It's not quite right to say 'don't try to crave anything'. It's not that you should avoid craving, or avoid wanting. The point is to practice awareness. When you do that, you will get lots of opportunities to observe the mechanism of desire... how the idea forms that something is missing, that you need that something, and the mind starts to become preoccupied with the "missing" thing, and then tunnel-vision sets in, and other things are blocked out.
Before you know it, the satisfying experience of just *being there* is gone, and you're caught up in wishing for something that's unavailable (at least, at the moment).
Go through that process enough times, and the mind begins to develop some new habits with regard to craving, and it becomes easier to just sit and be satisfied.
If you get the notion that you should become enlightened, and start imagining what that would be like, and start wanting that, well... yeah, that's just more of the same. So the individual sits there and practices with that. The content doesn't matter, one learns to just practice.
They don't "crave" for enlightment.
Buddhist's practise Zen, Yoga, etc. Because that way there body and mind become one. This is not something you have to desire or crave.. It is something that Buddhisht say has to be done : before you can become someone in life, you have to become yourself, you have to know yourself, you have to have armony in you body and mind. Enlightment is something that has to be done so you can be in peace with yourself, it's action, not desire, or will.
A rose will grow regardless of craving. A duck will float regardless of cravings. We try to overcome our cravings, but.

Why do Buddhists shave their heads? Rather than being a sign of humility, is this not MORE image-conscious, because of the effort required?

You're reading Buddhists say they don't/try not to crave anything. Surely they crave for enlightenment? I know i would if i were a Buddhist
