I thought it was great, doc! A laugh a page, as I remember. Read it years ago followed by it's sequel "Mount Misery", I think? About his psychiatry residency.
Sam Shem is the dude's name, right? Brilliant guy!
They reminded me a lot of Heller's "Catch 22" in humour and style.
And if I was a bettin' man, I'd bet the details were likely "balls-on" accurate! I dunno if you'd agree, but even physicians are human?!

You're reading Have any of you out there read the book "House of God"? What did you think of its view of the medical profession?
Comments
Oh, yes! The book was scarily accurate. I've come to think this even more as I've been in practice for a few years. Physicians are all too human.
.
The author's pseudonym is indeed Samuel Shem. (Ironic, since in Hebrew this translates to "True Name.") He "came out of the closet" a few years ago, and is really the Harvard psychiatrist Stephen Bergmann. I heard him speak once, and he's a fascinating character. :-)

One of the characters in the book, the medical student 789, was one of my med school nephrology professors. That was cool to find out!

That 'character' (789) was great! Was he as described in 'real life'? I've met a coupla' folks thru the years who occupy the 'genius seats' way out past left field like him, but could be guaranteed to say the clumsy thing in any given social or (especially) sensitive political situation.

People like Dr. Bergmann ('out-of-town' brilliant but unassuming; genius but also socially keenly adroit) are truly inspiring! I love the rare opportunities to listen to them in whatever situation or context.
