Greenhouses work by trapping solar heat. If you have a thermal mass (like a concrete floor) that gets heated up during the day and radiates heat back into the greenhouse when things freeze at night, keeping the interior temperature above freezing, then you need nothing else.
However most green houses are not very well insulated, glass makes a poor insulator, thus often a greenhouse in snow country will be attached to the heated dwelling, getting radiant heat from the walls of that dwelling) or will have a minor heating system to keep the colder night air at bay.
Soda bottle walls have the uptake of solar heat during the day and the 'dead air' space that makes a somewhat good insulator.
I have seen the use of say alcohol (rubbing kind) trapped in bottles (water can be used but needs to be boiled and the bottle sealed while boiling hot) in a few bottles providing a thermal mass that helps to offset the loss of heat.

You're reading Is this a good greenhouse idea? its made out of a soda bottle. skip to 1:55 Would this take care of the plant in winter? or would i still need to protect the leaves of the plant?
