Question

Help answer this question below.

My cpu keeps on over heating then shuts down. Its running at 100c, and my fan at 2500rpm. But when i look for a new fan, the fans seem to all run at that RPM. But i did notice that there is no Thermal "gunk" under the heatsink, could that be the problem?

I am no computer wiz, but yes, i believe so.

I think I was thought (this may be wrong) that that "gunk" helps proper air circulation and cooling.

    Definitely!!!

That thermal compound *really* helps transfer the heat from the CPU to the heat sink.

Without a small dab of Arctic Silver or similar, that heat sink just isn't going to do much of anything. It's kind of like a car radiator without any liquid in it.
