By slowing down your breathing, you can slow your heart rate (unless there is a medical issue going on with you at that time). Deep, slow breaths, slow things down. As far as controlling the actual beating of your heart all of the time as if it were just breaths.. not something I would even want to be able to do myself and thankfully we cannot do it.

Our heart beats by involuntary muscles. We don't "control" them the way we control voluntary muscles like the ones in our arms for instance.

the muscle of the heart, comprising the chief component of the myocardium and lining the walls of the large vessels joined to the heart; it is composed of fibers of striated but involuntary muscle. The composition and organization of its fibers resemble those of skeletal muscle, but instead of forming a syncytium, its branched, mononucleate cells are linked end to end by intercalated disks that provide both mechanical and ionic coupling for coordination of the entire muscle. Basically, the heart is designed to work on its own without us having to think to keep it going.

I read somewhere that Yogi's can deliberately slow their heart rate.

As everyone has said, the heart is an involuntary muscle, like the ones that control peristalsis in the bowels, so we can't stop it. But Why? Basically, it has to do with there being a need to stop it. We can stop our breathing, but our lungs continue to work to take the oxygen out of the spare air in our lungs- and if we hold our breath long enough, eventually our body will take over and force us to start breathing again. We need to be able to hold our breath sometimes, like when underwater, but our body isn't going to let us do it to the point it will endanger our lives. There is no need to every stop your heart and the side effects of doing so would be much quicker and more devastating than holding the breath.

G'day Davidc437, Thank you for your question. Your heart regulates your heart beat and it is set to keep doing it automatically. You can hold your breath because it is occasionally good to hold it such as when you are underwater. You will find that you cannot do it for long before you breathe. We need to keep our hearts beating so it is set up to be an unconscious act. I have attached sources for your information.
