Help answer this question below.
Why not take it one step further and dispense with belief altogether? What exactly do you need belief for?
As far as I can tell, belief's main value is in making us feel confident about something which is, in fact, somewhat doubtful. That is, it's a psychological-comfort tool, rather than a truth-oriented tool.
Belief is like painting the windows blue because you're annoyed that you can't see the sky on a cloudy day. But if the sky is cloudy, someone who puts truth first will go ahead and tolerate the clouds, rather than cover them over with their preferred color.
Science is a particular way of trying to investigate the truth. It has its limitations, but in general it's quite good at certain kinds of truth. That's it, it doesn't really get any better than that: science is a tool for use with certain kinds of problems. It's not the answer to every question about life... many of the most important questions are things it cannot even begin to answer, such as "who am I?", or "what is a meaningful basis for my life?", or "what is ethical action?".
For those kinds of questions, you need a different approach, and neither science nor the typical "believe in our dogma" religion is equipped to give you that. And in either case, belief only gets in the way for those kinds of questions.
I have the same train of thought as you. One thing that could be different though is that I won't rule out the possibility of a god because there are no verifiable causes of our existence.. I'm agnostic because I HAVE to be.
Just playing devil's advocate here, but:
Do you believe in atoms? Until 1981, nobody had ever seen one, but their existence had been accepted by science for thousands of years without any kind of empirical observation.
I like to believe in what I can see and touch, too, but ... I've been flim-flammed before, so now I don't even believe some of the things that I DO see.
I have better faith (ultimately everything comes back to faith, I think) in my ability to reason, to follow a logic trail, to critically analyze the writing of others ... and their trustworthiness. After all, I haven't seen Antarctica, either -- may never see it -- but I believe in it.
So perhaps you need to question what it is that you REALLY believe in, and why. After all, if you ONLY believe in what you see and touch then how do you know that we have a government in Washington DC (in the US), if you haven't been there and seen it. Even then, just seeing buildings and people isn't much proof, either, is it?
I also don't "believe in" a god or gods, not so much because I can't or won't ever see one (and if I did I'd suspect trickery, drugs and delusion before I believed in "a manifested deity", because I've learned that those things are real -- fakes -- if you don't mind the oxymoron). On the other hand, I keep wondering "How did all this 'stuff' get here in the universe -- and the scope of the universe itself, from cosmic to nano levels?" And I like to read about what those who closely look into and study the parts of that that they can comprehend and speculate about helps to define my growing consciousness. I'm not completely closed to religion, either, except when it says that I must be.
Don't lash out at me becuase I'm a non-believer, try to sway my beliefs with compelling facts and thoughts.
You should decide that for yourself. If you find no desire or need to have a belief in a deity, you should forget about seeking one. Some people seem to need a god in their lives and others do not.
I am sorry honey but that bothers me, your going thru something..like all of us do..but there is a superior entity Believe in God, he is inside all of us...he created you..
Why should you? Is there something you're missing?
If so, I would suggest you also conciser believing in Santa Claus, Magic Pixies, any / all ancient deities (some, like Venus might be good fun to worship), etc. There's no reason to take up faith in one Magical, Mystical being without going whole hog, is there?
Don't knock it until you try it. You have probably tried everything else, why not try Jesus. There is a site on the internet: "Chick Publications", they have these little comic books that are really fun to read, yet informative. Look them up! And One thing is for sure, we are going to serve someone, God or satan, and another thing is for sure, one day we will all die, and leave here. Where will you spend eternity?
Ah! The all encompassing questions! Why are we here? What is the meaning of life? Is there a God?
One thing you have to understand about the God question is that you can't approach it head on? You see the more effort you put into finding God, the more confounded you will be, because lets face the facts ladies and gentlemen, if the dude doesn't want to be found, your not going to find him, and in the end your just going to wind up looking like an ass.
Does God exist? Well you know there have been a lot of very smart people throughout history that have pondered this question long and hard, and they all seem to agree that, yes, there is something that makes this world go round! Most atheists and science nuts don't like to admit it, but even Sir Isaac Newton the father of modern science, admitted that their must be a supreme architect who constructed the universe. Thats a fact.
Going into the science of the matter, lets look at it from God's perspective; "Here you are, mortal human being, unique in your own imperfection, but with a lot of pride and vanity. You think highly of yourself but not so much for others, as you are a greedy, instinctive, selfish being, yet you do have the ability to think exponentially which gives you a window into the world of chemistry, economics, business, mathematics, and tool making which grants you the ability to drop white phosphorous bombs on your neighbors and deny them healthcare coverage for the wounds that you inflicted upon them. Your genetics are not far away from the animal kingdom, and it shows through your acts of aggression, which are often very instinctive and not well thought out hence you have the innate response of declaring war on everything instead of finding a peaceful resolution. Humanity is like a five year old child, who just found his fathers 357. revolver in the night stand drawer, you are unwise to wield such power. However you are endowed with this superiority complex, that you must be God like and aspire to be as such, so you climb upon the backs of your fellow man, beat him into submission, crush his spirit, and make him your slave... And you aspire to be like me? You seek me out so you may dissect me and gain the all knowing wisdom of the Universe? Well then allow me to dissect you, as I would an insect, since your communal instincts are so similar to the war like society's of ants and bee's, your brain is thus as small, and therefore cannot comprehend the awesomeness of the universe, even still, if I endowed you with such knowledge... Your head would explode and your heart burst from your chest. If you must know if I exist or not there are two things you can do, kneel and pray, or wait to see me when your time is nigh for surely it comes swiftly."
Now I don't speak for God, but I think that sums it up in a nut shell! So you see, we are a destructive creature, and the closer we try to get to God, the father away we push ourselves away from it. I am not going to call God a "him", because I think referring to him in the image of man is an insult to a celestial and spiritual being. We as humans are nothing like God, nor will any of us ever be, that includes the governments of the world. If you try to be like the God of the Universe, you will become the exact opposite. But what is important however, and what you should really take to heart is, that we are all a part of God, and that should be satisfaction enough. If it's not, your probably going in the wrong direction, even if you insist on paving that road with good intentions I assure you that road will still lead you to hell my friends.
Thanks for reading.
If you have a King James Bible read Romans the entire 1st chapter. And read St. John 3:16.
It's not a simple matter of someone trying to enlighten you or to persuade you to believe in God or to prove to you that He exists, you have to "want" to know if He exists. If you are honestly and truly seeking to find out if God exists or not, perhaps you should ask Him to reveal Himself to you.
On the other hand, if you are "not" truly and honestly seeking to find out if God exists, then don't expect Christians to try to persuade you. It is not their burden to carry. A Christians burden is to witness of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, but it is up to you to believe it or not.
Most of your facts are second hand that you have never seen but believe.
First, you have to open your heart. Talk to Jesus in the quiet of your home, tell Jesus that you want to know Him, but you can't find your way. Ask Jesus to please came into your life, to show you the way to His Heavenly Father. Jesus will answer your prayers, He will put someone in your life who will lead you to Him. Jesus Loves you, sooooooooooo much and is calling you now, other wise you would not be seeking Him. God Bless you. Keep praying, never give up.
Will the pissing contest between believers and non-believers ever trickle to an end?

Dear Catholics, is it possible that there are individuals out there that know more about God than the church? A genuine question, interested in your thoughts. Thanks.
