I would agree. But only if there is continual supervision when she is around the children. Most women who suffer this are not even aware that they have a problem. Would you agree that the welfare of the children is paramount? I know that the actual infanticide rate is relatively low, but it's not a chance I would be willing to take as a parent or as a medical professional. +

I have first hand experience with this subject. I was the support network for my ex. If I for some reason was unable to be around, I always made sure someone was. Kids are always paramount in my life. I was really more worried anout her hurting me or herself then the the baby.

Interesting that you bring up the factor for harm to self. An article on Wikipedia states that the incidence of harm to self as opposed to harm to the child is about a percent higher. There's no citation provided, though, so I don't know how accurate these figures are. 4% for infanticide. 5% for suicide.

Very good point. I was diagnosed with it too (depression...not pyschosis) with my first child and I dont think the thought of harming my baby ever crossed my mind. It was either harming myself or abandoning the baby because I was convinced that I was not going to be a good mother. But as far as the "pychosis" diagnosis, I to agree that it would be different if there was a strong support system. But sending baby home with mom who obviously showed SOME sort of violent or aggressive demeaner in order to be diagnosed as such, as in this case her where I live, imo should have NEVER been left alone with that baby!! So sad for everyone :-(...

I don't see the questioner as having "passed judgment" on anyone. She asked peoples' opinions. And psychosis is a very real and serious issue that shouldn't be treated as though everything is hunky-dory.

The odd thing is that Tila never cussed. I did. "Smart ass" in reference to remarks is an American staple, frankly. And while I will not apologize for it, I will say that I have a modicum of shame over the fact that I only did it out of a tiny bit of spite. She falsely accused Tila of cussing, so I thought I'd show her what cussing *really* was. Uncharitable and beneath me, I know. But I loathe uncalled for rudeness.

First of all, she misread the question. Second of all, after Tila apologized for her part in any misunderstanding, J-J continued to be rude. Third, when I politely pointed out that I didn't think Tila intended to be judgmental, she then had to turn around and be rude and dismissive and attack *me*. At that point, all bets are off and I don't feel it incumbent on me to continue civility. Screw her.

Agreed...locally there was a case last week with a mom doing something unthinkable to her infant (not even going to type it...it was horrible :-( ) but they said she had been diagnosed with post-partem "pyschosis", not depression. I just think that with that type of diagnosis they should have not let her take that baby home. Could have saved his life :-(

Yes. Post partum depression is one thing. Post partum psychosis is a whole other kettle of fish. I understand that if detected quickly the treatment time is of fairly short duration, but if left too long can take many months to treat and overcome.

My heart goes out to women who suffer this. But at least they can be helped! :)
