That's quite unprofessional. Tipping is not considered mandatory, although it is a major faux pas not to tip properly because of the poor wages servers make (thank you, Uncle Sam).

They -probably- stepped over line when advising you that you should not come back; I do not think they are technically allowed to do that.

I sense there is more to the story than that however. Was this a bachelor party or something?

You were in the right. If the service and food were bad, they didn't deserve a tip, and it's WAY unclassy to ask for tips anyway.

First, if the food was bad, it should not be taken out of the server. The cook does not get his wage reduced for sending out a poor quality entree.
Secondly, if the service was bad, you should speak to the manager immediately. There are a number of reasons that customers don't tip, including bad service. However, because ignorance and refusal to "supplement" a server's wage is among the other reasons, not leaving a tip is ambiguous, and essentially does not resolve the problem.
As a server, I have been "stiffed" many times and even though it angers me, I wouldn't chase any customer out of the restaurant for it. Ok, I have once and it didn't end well. However, I do remember the folks that don't tip, or don't tip well. If they choose to return to the restaurant, they will be treated to less than stellar service. Why? As a waitress, I depend on tips for a living. Why would I take care of one table that tips poorly when I have a section full of customers who will tip well for good service? I know it sounds trashy to behave in such a manner, but I am not the only one to do this.

I will always leave a tip of some kind, even if its a bad one.
I've worked as a waitress, if you want a good tip, you have to work for it.
That's just the way it works.

I tip anyway. Think of it this way: "Their job sucks. You may as well cut them some slack."

I would complain to the manager. You don't have to give a tip. I don't give tips if the food is horrible and the service sucks. You already paid for the crappy food you didn't like. Then they expect you to give tips for their not so customer friendly staff? Yeah Right.

It isn't right for them to express their anger to you like they did. BUT...you can't make you decision to tip or not based on bad food. The server has nothing to do with that portion of the experience. I tip SOLELY on the attitude, professionalism, and promptness of the waitstaff. It is rare that I don't tip but it has happened before. You were right, they were wrong.

You should have complained from the start. If the service was bad, you should have asked for another server. If the food was bad you should have called the manager over and sent it back..right then. By waiting til the end, then not tipping, it looked like an excuse to get out of doing it.

I do think tipping is mandatory regardless of the service or food quality. When you go out to a restaurant it should just be figured as part of your bill ( not by the restaurant) but by you who is eating there. They are providing a service to you, waiting on you and people should be paid for that effort. 15% at minimum.
A buffet however, (even if they serve you drinks)I have mixed feelings about.
