Speaking for myself, no it is not. I was having the symptoms of a serious neurological illness (unexplained weakness in the arms and legs, vision problems etc). I stopped chewing gum and drinking sodas with aspartame in them, and the symptoms stopped.

After reviewing scientific studies, FDA determined in 1981 that aspartame was safe for use in foods. In 1987, the General Accounting Office investigated the process surrounding FDA's approval of aspartame and confirmed the agency had acted properly. However, FDA has continued to review complaints alleging adverse reactions to products containing aspartame. To date, FDA has not determined any consistent pattern of symptoms that can be attributed to the use of aspartame, nor is the agency aware of any recent studies that clearly show safety problems.

Carefully controlled clinical studies show that aspartame is not an allergen. However, certain people with the genetic disease phenylketonuria (PKU), and pregnant women with hyperphenylalanine (high levels of phenylalanine in blood) have a problem with aspartame because they do not effectively metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine, one of aspartame's components. High levels of this amino acid in body fluids can cause brain damage. Therefore, FDA has ruled that all products containing aspartame must include a warning to phenylketonurics that the sweetener contains phenylalanine.

There are two schools of thought.
One is that it is harmful to your health, and you will find an abundance of websites that testify this.
Two is that it is not harmful, when broken down by the body - it it two amino acids joined together - it is used like any other protein you eat. Aspartame has been widely in use for many years, and there is nothing can actually be attributed to its use (with a cause/effect relationship rather than a link), thus my personal opinion is that it is safe to eat.
I don't personally like the bitter aftertaste though.

Not if you react badly to it, as my partner does! I read up on how Aspartame manufacturers (allegedly) bought all the FDA testers one-by-one until Aspartame was passed as safe, I also read in the same article that pilots were still banned from consuming it before flights due to the increased risk of seizure and heart failure (but it's all right for the rest of us to drop dead, though), initially it was classed as a harmful substance!
It took a while to finally isolate it, but if my partner has anything with aspartame in, she gets violent uncontrollable limb spasms and cramps, and often blinding headaches within 10 minutes of ingestion. It helps her to drink loads of water if this happens - it seems to flush out reasonably quickly, otherwise it lasts for hours.
From our own personal experience, aspartame is NOT safe. There's loads of articles you can Google on Aspartame allergy - here's just two: www.sweetpoison.com/aspartame-information.html
    www.presidiotex.com/nutrapoison.html
Maybe this could be your problem too, or that of your kids! It's easy to test, read ALL the food labels carefully, look for 'Aspartame' or 'contains a source of phenylalanine' and cut ALL of these out for a week, especially Aspartame fizzy drinks, sweets and even some crisps. It's difficult, but you must be thorough - then observe behaviour/temperament; you may be surprised!

Compared to Sacchrin? Of course! Now, the best sugar substitute to date, in my opinion, would have to be sucralose. It tastes a lot better, and it's the closest thing we can get to sugar. It tastes like sugar, because it *is* sugar (albeit a "left-handed" one.) Both sugar and sucralose start the same way, but the process is a little different to yield the final product.

    G'day Starnite,

    Thank you for your question.

The FDA and FSA in Europe have approved it. There are claims that it is linked with brain tumours, brain lesions and lymphoma leading to some activity to ban it. There have also been claims of links with lupus, MS and Alzheimers Disease. There is also concern about the regulatory process. It is up to you to decide who you believe.

I have attached sources for your reference.

When i drink anything with aspartame I have serious chest pains within an hour. I believe it to be a toxin and will not ingest anything that contains it. I also make it a point to call and complain to the manufacturer when my favorite products switch to using it. Moreover I also stay away from Mono Sodium Glutamate and a host of other chemicals that are "safe" for consumption. Such as propylene glycol aka industrial anti freeze, and isoproylene glycol as well as ethylene glycol.

Save your self, these are all known toxins that are put into your food, lotions, etc. etc.

im a scientist and i would say the answer is one of the following:-

    1) yes it is harmful
    2) no it is safe.

After successfully carrying out several tests i can confirm that one of the above is almost certain to be correct within 95% confidence limits
