Your idea sounds very interesting! Good for you! My suggestion would be to start practicing on very small pieces of watercolor paper, using DIFFERENT weights and surface textures. You will notice that each of the following suggestions will ‘create’ a different effect. For example, Cold Press paper has more surface tooth, more literal texture (dips and valleys). Hot Press paper is smooth as it is ‘ironed.’ Depending on the effect you wish to paint, the texture of the paper would be, I believe, an important issue. The ‘weight’ of the watercolor paper is also an important consideration! If, say, you use a lot of water, possibly the weightier paper, over 140 lb., would be the better choice (depending on your budget too!) Also, of course, you must know that letting each watercolor layer completely dry is key. Of course this ‘dryness’ would have to be a must before you lay down any pastel colorings.

    Some questions you might consider:
    • What kind of watercolor paper have I used in the past?
    • Do I have samples of all watercolor papers and weights?
    • Do I prefer to work in small sizes or large paintings?
    • Do I plan my paintings by ‘studies,’ or do I ‘just go for it?’
    • How much time do I prefer to use for a painting?
    • How much water do I use when I watercolor?
