The first step to preventing spiders in general are cut back as much brush/ground cover within a 24 in band around your home as possible. Next get some type of residual insecticide to spray on the exterior foundation. You can also get an aerosol spray and treat under the baseboards in the rooms around your home. Dont forget to treat pipe chasings, and other areas where utilities enter your home. Spiders are a creature of habit, if you have spiders than you have other pests if you eliminate the other pests the spiders will leave. One good website that has alot of good products on it is www.doityourselfpestcontrol.com. And if your ever in doubt, if you can find the flat type glue traps you can place them behind cabinets, under beds along the walls, and other inaccessable areas. This will tell you whats crawling around that you arent seeing.

Any exterminator or book can tell you what they like and where they like to hide and build webs. If you can't control the damp, dark and warm places they like, the next best thing is an exterminator perhaps. That's all I can think of for you to do.

If you have an infestation, I would -strongly- suggest that you hire a professional to remove them.

They and the Hobo spider are the deadliest insects in the US.

It's a misconception that Black Widows are particulary dangerous.. they can only kill a child with a weak immune system. Brown Recluses and Hobo spiders cause necrotizing flesh wounds (the venom constantly eats away at tissue causing gangrene). I know of people who have lost limbs (including a leg up to the knee) to single Brown Recluse bites.
