I find Gatorade does an incredible job. I always down at least 32oz. when I am hung over and it fixes the headache in minutes.

    Water.

    Sleep.

    Painkillers for any headache.

Eggs and/or yoghurt, as soon as you can stomach them.

If all else fails and your circumstances permit, a "hair of the dog", another drink. Don't get drunk again though or you'll feel even worse tomorrow.

Remember, with a hangover you will only feel better and better as the day wears on. Good luck.

    Old School

The primary components of a hangover are threefold:

    1) Irritation of tissues due to cogeners in alcoholic drinks

    2) Additional irritation due to dehydration as the liver absorbs water from the body to use in processing the alcohol

    3) Alcohol level in the digestive system overwhelming the body's ability to absorb it.

The treatments for hangover address the problem on these fronts.

Hydration seems to be the biggest help. Providing enough water for both your body And your liver greatly reduces the symptoms.

Taking water-soluable antioxidant vitamins (esp. B-complex and C) also help reduce tissue inflamation.

Finally, the greasy cheeseburger/menudo/McD's hashbrowns cure is simply slowing the rate of alcohol absorbtion. Food in the digestive system, particularly fatty foods, decrease the rate at which alcohol is absorbed and metabolized.

The SF Chronicle published a couple of excellent articles about this a few years ago:

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/12/25/LVGQJGC2OM1.DTL&hw=hangover&sn=007&sc=440

The best way is to hydrate yourself. Much of the pain and nausea from a hangover come from your body (and in particular your brain) being dehydrated. If you take in lots of fluids, that should help alleviate the hangover. Gatorade or other sports drinks are good, as are plain water and fruit juice. The relief you get from the "hair of the dog" is due to the hydrating effect of the drink. However, since alcohol is a diuretic, it can compound the situation.

Take two Anacin. Regular aspirin or Tylenol won't cut it. Anacin has caffeine.
Suck down a big jug of Gatorade, it replenishes what you lost while drinking.
If you want you could even do this before you go to sleep so you don't wake up messed up.

Before you drink take a tablespoon of oil (be it vegetable, canola etc) and one aspirin with a cup of coffee. You will wake up feeling fine.

Take two aspirin the night of your drinking right before you go to bed. (Of course you have to be sober enought to remember to do this).

The only cure I've ever found is to resume drinking, otherwise I just lessen the pain with lots of flaking out on the sofa eating junk.

Hangover responds better to prevention than to cure.
Do not get drunked-up and you do not get a hangover.

Sharona Life is a Tale Told by an Idiot

Well, my hangovers lasted about 3 days. The last one I can remember, I dry heaved for so long I could see bits of my stomach in the toilet bowl. So, the best cure is not to drink.

Now, for you, a normal drinker? Try vitamins before and after the drinking. Take with food, but the reason the hangover gets so awful is it depletes so many of the substances your body needs to stay happy and well. Vitamin B is crucial.
