Life in a Northern Town q:)

New York by Frank Sinatra.
Rocky Mountain High.
Icehouse - "Great Southern Land".
(The Streets of) Philadelphia
Chris Rea's "Windy Town" and "Steel River", which are about his home town and the industries of the river on which it stands.
'I Still Call Australia Home', (allegedly the New Zealand National Anthem) or 'Tenterfield Traveller', both by Peter Allen. If I'm sufficiently maudlin, either can bring a lump to the throat.
Bombs ova Bagdad

I'll go with blank's answer
" Life in a Northern Town " by The Dream Academy
[ with Simple Minds' " Belfast Child " right up there, too ]

nice video.
I wonder what town that is?
by de Joisey on July 26th, 2009
This is my favorite so-called 'one-hit wonder'. I own three of The Dream Academy's albums. I find all of them very good. But this song is a pure classic superlative song all-around. I remember this song seemingly coming out of nowhere when it was first released and I remember it literally blowing me away the very first time I heard it. It is very rare for that to happen in my life. Excellent answer, garster..if you want an honest answer. Excellent. +6

I just watched this video you gave us. Thanks, garster..if you want an honest answer. I like this video as well as the more famous one. Great film, great music. [ Yes, indeed, de Joisey - I wonder the town, too ]

I think it's Newcastle, near the Scots border. But I could be wrong.

What a beautiful place, even if we're unsure of exactly where it is, Slartibartfast:) I hope I got your name correct, the print is difficult for me sometimes. :). And still such a great song for me. I think I'll answer the question with the same answer!
:)
A question from 2009, even :)
by WelbyQuentin on February 23rd, 2011
I agree with Slartifartblast..Newcastle.
by Artful Bodger on February 23rd, 2011
I very much doubt that's Newcastle, maybe near Newcastle, but that village/town is way too small to be Newcastle.
by thetriumphantcourtjester on February 23rd, 2011
Back in winter 1963 the town was a much smaller place.
by Sloonybartfast on February 23rd, 2011
The video was made in 1984...
by thetriumphantcourtjester on February 24th, 2011
It's about an earlier time, the set could have been constructed to resemble the town 21 years earlier.
by Sloonybartfast on February 24th, 2011
...or it could've been filmed in Hebden Bridge instead.

(I know Wikipedia's not too reliable, but trust me, it's not Newcastle, lol!)

This thread and your answer, blank!! -- has been one of my favorite threads since joining answerbag. I enjoy and respect this song immensely -- and the two videos are beautiful -- and this first original video we've been wondering about -- the town is god da****D grogeous!! Breath-taking to me !!
I've appreciated both of your commitment to figuring out the town, Slartibartfast and thetriumphantcourtjester. It's what answerbag is all about for me.
I read your link, thetriumphantcourtjester, thanks. :)
And, again, blank, I'm behind you 100% on your answer :)

I DID say I could be wrong. I've never been to England.
