Was President Kennedy sensible or reckless by suggesting man should land on the moon by 1970 after America had only spent 15 minutes in space?

    I think he was ambitious, not reckless. We wanted to beat the Russians into space, but to have failed miserably through reckless measures likely would have doomed NASA. As it was, the program worked beautifully (if you don't listen to those on AB who don't believe we ever got to the moon....)

    I think he knew how close we were at the time- all the things being processed. Also the Russians were making great strides in that area and the Pres. wanted to set forth a challenge to our scientists to get to work hard and fast.
