A lady in Australia who helps homeless people once saw a homeless man reading a book under a street lamp ... It prompted her idea for a footpath library for the homeless ... Do you have anything similar for the homless in your town? - your opinion please?

Homeless people here have the streets, the parks, and too often, the boot. Good for that woman in Australia, and thank you for sharing her story. Good news .. rare.

- Most welcome ... I saw her interviewed on TV with some of the street people who use the books ... It was amazing how many actually used and read the books, and commented too how much the books gave some meaning back to their lives ... Thanks for the answer +

In LA we have a lot of homeless shelters.
Nothing like a library however.
I find it hard to believe that most homeless people would take a library seriously.
How exactly does that work?
Seems like it would be used more for shelter, getting out of the cold, for sleep etc.

- She drives around with a van load of old donated books and magazines, then places a temporary library on the footpath for the homeless to use ... It is very popular, and has become a lifesaver for many, by offering a little hope whilst maintaing some peace and use of mind ... Perhaps you could be the one who starts similar in LA :) ...   Sounds like the homeless in Australia are more humble than the ones in LA.
  The ones is LA would use each page from a book to roll up a joint.

  LA is very different from Australia.
  Homeless people here have lost all self-respect for the most part and they live in fear because of all the shit on the streets.

- If you haven't seen The Soloist yet with Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr., it's a true story about a homeless man in L.A., and in the special features, there's a short documentary about the homeless in L.A. and who is doing what for them. Good movie and I learned something:).
