Question

Help answer this question below.

Has anyone ever heard of a movie producer actually reading the first screenplay a person ever wrote? (I've heard it's impossible, that they won't even look at one unless by an established writer, or submitted by a writer's agent).

Don't want to burst your bubble, but Matt Damon and Ben Affleck weren't entirely nobodies when they wrote GLH. They both had a few acting credits to their names already which means they already had agents and connections within the industry.

If you are a completely new writer and do not have an agent, it is almost impossible to get heard. I work in the industry and we get a lot of calls from writers trying to submit some work. While we'd love to read fresh material, we're already overloaded with submissions from established writers.

It's an unfair world, but really without an agent or credits to your name, you need some connections to get your foot in the door. It's unfortunately about who you know...

Still, work hard! If you give up you'll never reach your goals. Everyone has to start somewhere so maybe you'll get lucky. But I'd highly recommend trying to get an agent.

It wasn't impossible for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck when they wrote Good Will Hunting, they were nobodies until it was made into a screenplay and even won Oscars for it.
