I'm not a Wiccan, so my answer may not be entirely appropriate by the standards of the Wiccan faith, but here it is.

The method and actions you use should be entirely dependent upon what they WANT to do to you. Are they literally seeking to kill you? If so, the police are there, and you are fully within your rights to defend yourself. If someone is coming to harm you physically you should never feel you should not fight back in some way, be that legally, or physically.

The way you fight back depends on how much time you have, and if you can acquire a firearm or other method of protection in that period (Protection magic only works when you're willing to protect yourself, after all).

If they're coming after you in a magical sense then, yes, you should use protective magic first. A talisman always seems to be most affective (most likely because the mere act of wearing it reminds you of your protection).

However, sometimes, you do need to fight fire with fire. When somebody is really out to do you magical harm, and you fear that your protective measures (whatever they are) are not working then you should not hesitate to fight back with your own offensive rituals.

There really is a difference between throwing around curses and other offensive magic because you want to, and doing so to keep yourself safe.

I can't speak for Karma, or the Law of Threefold Return personally. I am not Wiccan, and I don't believe in those two rules. However, chances are, when you're acting to protect yourself, they will never affect you negatively.

You should retaliate with magic only after careful thought, analysis, and ethical considerations. Only fluffies differentiate between magical action and physical action. Both are subject to the Law of Return and the Wiccan Rede. If you would strike out to defend yourself physically, that is when it is appropriate to strike out to defend yourself magically. Sometimes the best defense is an offense.

To answer your final question (what does a Wiccan do): A Wiccan uses the least amount of force (physical or magical) adequate to protect himself/herself and those around him/her.

Use a Protection Spell, a strong one. (Only "fight back" if you really FEEL the NEED to.)

Fighting back can backfire on you, so I agree Equidae, use a strong protection spell. By doing that, not only will that person not be able to hurt you, but the three-fold law will catch up to them eventually, and they will have to pay for what they did, or tried to do. Karma really sucks sometimes...

Protection spells. Invoke the Furies to speed up Karma. They will fall short...

It's not "doing wrong" if fighting back was actually called for. Just like in physical terms, if a man is coming at you with a knife, you're not going to feel much of a consequence if you kick him in the balls.

Equate the physical with the magical - in truth they are the same thing for magic is in every action you take not just when you cast your circle and call the quarters.

"Harm none" is the ideal that we are supposed to abide by, but it's not supposed to rule in times of reality where harming none is not an option. A wise Wiccan would be best, in these situations, to use more of a "harm the least" policy. That's just my two cents.

(Yes, I put that in a comment earlier, but realized it worked as an answer to the whole question so I put it here too. Just in case.)

The answer here was the protection/banishing spells. They worked like a charm. My first reaction was to fight back because that is how I was raised. I firmly believe that the spiritual realm desires balance and if an unbalanced "yo-yo" tips the scales they will be dealt with... Block them and prosper in your way...

I would imagine part of being Wiccan would be to respect the world. As people are part of the world I would hop you'd respect them and ignore their actions against you. "Turning the other cheek" also annoys the hell out of people as well... ;o)

Rockme, you've gotten all kinds of different answers about what a Wiccan would do. I'll tell you what I know some very intelligent Wiccans have done: ignored it, and moved on.

Your spiritual energy can be spent in better ways, ways that are more fulfilling than concentrating on someone who wishes you ill. They do not deserve your interest and attention.

And for goodness' sake, do NOT go out and get a gun. I can just imagine what the police would say if they heard an explanation about needing a mundane gun to fight off magical spells.

If the person is coming after you physically, get the cops involved and get a restraining order, and then stop interacting with this negative person COMPLETELY. No phone calls, no gossip, no spell-casting back and forth. The world is too big (and too good) and your life (all life) is too short to dedicate more time to this downer.

You're worried about balance in the spiritual realm. When you think someone is putting out too much negativity, re-balance things by putting out good in a more general way, not by focussing on and thus reinforcing the negative energy. :)

According to many books & internet sites it is ok to protect yourself spiritually against dark spells, entities etcetc...

You can contact your local wiccan covent or try a Wiccan book store in your area...

  • A curse is never appropriate. Never. You take the proper channels. If you have any knoweldge of Wicca the first rule is Do No Harm. You don't have the right to any "special powers" being Wiccan, just an awareness of how to honor them. Focus on good. See good, do good be good and let the chips fall where they may. If you honor the Goddess, and then try and take matters in your own hands, its like saying the Divine doesn't know what it's doing. If a person is going after you, call the police.
