Do you think there is a certain age that is too old for a Mother to keep breastfeeding? Under what age is it appropriate and after what age is it not appropriate? (I am just curious on people's view on this subject.)

I think that if it gets past age 6, it is time to wean your child off breast-milk.

I think once the child is old enough to get their nutrients from solid foods, breastmilk starts to lose some of it's importance. At least nutritionally speaking. I'd agree that 2 years is probably a good age for weaning (many toddlers will lose interest in the breast around this age anyway). As far as it being too old to breastfeed, certainly not. I think once a child becomes more and more social (around 3 or 4) that continuing to breastfeed may be detrimental to the child's social development (not many children are nursed at that age) since they may be viewed as "strange" by the other children, and the other mothers may think there is something wrong and keep their children away.

My mother breastfed my baby sister till she was 1 year and a half (1 1/2). 2 years a older seems quite too much for me.

How can you make a ruling about it? Until recent centuries, children breastfed until 4 or 5 as it was their only major source of calcium. This is still the case in many countries. I would never want a woman to be forced to stop brestfeeding, either by law or by pressure, as it is the best thing for mum and baby.
Most babies stop by themselves around 2, only coming back for a comfort stop occasionally.

I don't think it's age specific, I think neither the mother or the child should be told by anybody else when to stop, as long as BOTH are comfortable continuing to breastfeed, it should continue to happen. Many mothers have uninformed doctors who tell them they don't make enough milk and encourage them to give up too soon, many mothers also feel the pressure of society, which is really too bad, about 1% of the population (world, outside of women with HIV) are actually unable to breastfeed.

When the child wants to stop is the best time to wean, the second best is when the mother wants to :)

My Brother-in-law was breast fed until he was 8 years old! That is way too long. I think anything beyond 2 years is too old.
