  • He's talking about this: A 'wise' person is able to host multiple conflicting viewpoints at the same time. So for example, they can consider the value of "free will" at the same time they consider the value of "determinism". Not-so-wise people are so bothered by the anxiety produced by such a state that they are forced to "choose sides" on everything... they cannot see how two opposing views should be *integrated* into a coherent whole, they think one side must win and the other must lose. In politics and religion, they're are a lot of unwise people. These are the folks who are most adamant and certain that their party or sect has all the right answers, and everybody else is completely wrong.
  • I think it is quite clear, but he hated the well-bred and looked for ways to get under their skin any time he could. I'm sure he was pointing out how the "well-bred" made themselves feel superior by comparing themselves favorably to those they wanted to feel superior to. The truly wise know that fault lies within our own minds.
