  • Too many things could cause this problem, especially without more info, to make an accurate diagnosis over the internet. Your check engine light is probably on, which means that fault codes have been stored in the vehicle's ECM. The first step in diagnosing the problem would be to get the codes pulled. You can probably have this done at no cost at most major auto parts stores.
  • I might know, but I'm not positive right away. Is the Jetta's 2.8L the 12V VR6 or is it the 30V? The 30V has problems with sensors. The engine will shut off sometimes if it has problems with even the most useless sensors.
  • There is (was) a known problem with this model; involving a bar that holds relays. This could be your problem, amongst many other things.
  • First, get back in your time machine and get a mechanic from 4 years in the future..lol Check your fuel pump. Also, you may want to put the pedal right to the floor and then turn the key. This cuts off the air mixture and 'chokes' the engine. This may get it going right. If the pump is fine, then it could be spark plugs, piston rings, coils, etc. I know that 2001-2004 jettas are notorious for electrical problems, so good luck pinpointing the problem. Sorry but you just gotta pick a part and work your way through the engine.
