I am not *that* into graphics design that I have ever run into it's limitations though, so I will take your word on that. What I do know is that it's done everything I've needed/wanted it to do and was a lot cheaper.

it's a great program and capable of powerful things. Just needs a few things like adjustment layers and better functions for working with images made for print. Right now it does not support CMYK or other common modes for print.

I downloaded Gimp and it looks like it will do the trick. It's layout is pretty similar to PS, and with it being open source, I think that's going to be a plus... not to mention that it's free. I'm not that much of a hardcore graphic artist, so I think that this will do the trick. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

if you are using it for professional work, you have very few options other than getting CS4. if you can find one of the earlier CS versions at a significantly cheaper price point, that is an option, but elements falls short in the professional arena.

Photoshop Elements is good.

It depends on what you need it for.

The highest class is Photoshop CS.

You can get version 3 or 4, there is little difference except three is cheaper now if you can find it used.

I make company logos, other graphic designs, etc. I'm not just looking to edit photos and things like that (all though I will do that from time to time as a hobby). I want to create textures as well. Do you remember the palet of controls you had in PS 6.0? That is much like what I am looking for. I found that CS4 is much more expensive than Elements and was curious of the differences. I obviously don't want to buy the wrong one. You know how software return policies are...

Well, you can download the trial versions and they last 30 days.
Get one at a time.
I recommend CS4 since you are using it professionally, or CS3 if you can get a copy off of Ebay or something.
I use CS4, but I am a graphic design student and need to use the best.
Try a trial version and see what it does for you.
