Printers

Question:

I refill my toner cartridges when the printer won't print because it says they're empty. First thing I have to do is empty out the remaining toner, and there seems to be loads of it. How come?

I forget which magazine it was, but they did a test and found that some manufacturers set their printers to report empty at as much as 40% of the toner/ink remaining!

Lucky for me, I have a printer that will still print with a pseudo-empty ink tank. It starts giving me warnings long before it's actually empty enough to affect print quality but I just keep on keeping on until it's actually out.

Whoever made your printer must have got wise to people like me and installed a cut-off to make you buy toner twice as often as you need to.

Thanks... deliberate malevolence huh? I can shake it a couple of times but that only helps some.
Fortunately it costs about $10 to refill... not too bad. but I still wonder about that stuff I shake out.

Ah yes, the old shaking trick. Basically the only way to own a copier or laser printer without deep pockets ;)

I would call it a design flaw if I wasn't cynical enough to believe it was intentional.
