Is that the best design they could come up with? It looks kind of 'Buck Rogers' to me (re: the space shuttle)

    This is a trick question. The shuttle looks kinda 'Buck Rogers' because if you watch the pilot 1979 Buck Rogers TV episode you'll learn that 'Buck Rogers' spacecraft WAS a space shuttle! He went off course and got frozen and revived in the 25th Century.

    Considering what it does (Launches and reenters the atmosphere and is reusable) there is a limit to the designs available.

    The "rounded" features, (nose, wing tips, etc) serve a purpose in guiding the hot gasses of re-entry around the craft efficiently), its delta wing shape is far easier and more stable for the forces of reentry.
