Yep. I'm from th' USA, but from the wild high-desert-mountains, or out-lands. - So every US city i have ever gone into is strange an' foreign t' me. Th' USA might as well be at least two very different countries. One city, an' one country. People from neither location can make any assumptions about folks who come from th' other. There is good an' bad, smart an' stupid, in both. Th' good generally outweighs th' bad, in both. (Can not say either side has a monopoly on smart or stupid, either.)
I find that th' trick is t' smile, a lot, an' ask politely for help. Lookin' as if i stepped through a time portal from th' 1800s helps for me, some. It warns them in advance what they are talkin' to, when they try to help me. But for other folks it could get them in "a heap o' trouble". LOL
My advice would be t' join a Cowboy Poetry Society, if there is one in your area. They have a very strong sense of justice, and seem to be the most patient with people of other cultures, believe it or not. Another idea would be any local American Historical Society. There is nothing more flattering to local people than someone who is sincerely interested in their history. Good luck, and happy trails t' you, robertini. :-)
