Help answer this question below.
Check the spark plug wires first. Open the hood on a dark night or in a dark garage and with the engine running look and listen for arcing from the plug wires ( a bright blue or orange spark or snapping sound). If the wires have a lot of miles on them (over 50,000 miles) I would replace them.
A leaking intake valve will cause an engine to backfire through the carb but not through the exhaust. Leaking valves will show up on a compression test or cylinder leak down test. But don't automatically assume the valves are bad. A stuck lifter or misadjustment could be the culprit. Another cause could be the ignition timimg.
Maybe you put the cables on in the wrong order. When you changed the distributor you should have changed the spark plugs and wires, btw. I'd check the firing/cable order first, then the timing, again.
Fireing order might be wrong.
You may need to replace the timing gears and chain

I have a 1989 Buick LeSabre . Neither the A/C or heater blow out the vents when the fan is turned on. The fan itself works fine.
