When i was younger we would play the state game.. when you say a state, then someone has to think of another state's name whos first letter is that of the last states last letter. or we'd do that with any place such as stores, etc.
Depends on the family. Some scream at each other, and the kids fight. Some sing those goofy car songs, some put on the DVD in the back for the kids while the front stays silent. Some just stay quite and look out the windows.*+++++*

We like play games and argue with each other and get own our parents nerves.
Sing, crack jokes, argue and pee a lot. The kids like to wave at truck drivers, so that the truck drivers will blow their horns. I was riding one time, and my brother put my son up to flipping off a truck driver. I was wondering why the truck driver had a shocked look on his face. My son was about 4 at the time.
Complain about how long it's taking to "get there".
Play the license plate game, looking for custom license plates and try and figure out what they mean.
Try to find a licence plate from each state on passing cars, or getting points for being the first to spot a Volkswagen Beetle.
Argue lol
fight fight watch movies fight some more and read.
I had creative parents, so I couldn't speak for families at large. My mum would give my brother and I double doses of Nyquil before we went on long rides. Kept us out for about 10-12 hours, no muss, no fuss. Other than that, most families I know invest in portable entertainment.
play the ABC game.... you have to find all the letters in the alphabet before anyone else does... or
you can play it like you have to use the first letter of the word begins with the letter you are looking for...
Crack jokes, crunch munch all day, sing, argue, and sometimes, doze off :)
Bond... then argue then go eat together then sleep and listen to music. Not sure why but I enjoy long car trips!
"Are we there yet?"
I recently drove the entire length of Michigan with my cousin and her 4 year old granddaughter. We made frequent stops. We made it a road trip, not just to get from here to there. We looked for places along the way to stop and explore. It breaks up the trip - and frankly I can't do more than a few hours driving without a quick stop.
We had 2 big games.
See how many states you can count the license plates from.
The other game was "I see something" followed by a color. Everyone else had to guess the "thing" that was that color. Whoever guessed got to do the next question. And it had to be something along the trip, something you "see".
We drove my mom crazy fighting.
sleep through Montana

Well my family enjoys plugging in the ipod to the car and listening to music and singing. Ha ha...stopping at truck stops looking at the crap they sell, and stalking up on coffee and mountain dew, and redbulls.
Make insults using the letters of other cars' license plates. BSA=ball sucking asshole. Beats massaging your ass when it gets sore anyways.
Screaming and yelling. It always make the time pass with such ease.

Do you know where to go when you want to play in the snow? Lassen Volcanic Ntl. Park in northern California. 2 days ago hubby and I did it.
